The only people who have not heard about Hurricane Sandy approaching are living under a rock. If you live in the Mid-Atlantic US you have heard the weather forecasters screaming STORM OF THE CENTURY, except they scream that every so often here in Philly. The nature of East Coast storms are unpredictable and so many residents of this part of the country don’t heed the warnings like they should, except if there is snow because walking out of the house is a trial and people tend to hunker down for a day or so. If there were in fact, a REALLY bad storm I think many would be caught off guard because it never happens here. That is a Florida, Texas, New Orleans thing, or a New England thing because well they stick out from the mainland US a little. The attitude is we don’t get that weather here.
I moved to Philly and started college a few weeks before Hurricane Gloria was slated to hit the US East Coast as the “Storm of the Century”. I remember my college classes being canceled and the whole city of Philly shut down. At the last minute the storm veered up the coast instead of heading inland and my parents on Long Island were slammed. I remember my parents were dealing with clean up for almost a year and many of their neighbors were without power for a whole month. They luckily got half of the power on in their house within a week and my Mom recalls stories of the neighbors lining up for hot showers since she was the only one with hot water on the block. She was the only one on the block with refrigeration and often had people in her house cooking since I grew up in a neighborhood where we were all in each others houses all the time.
That kind of storm has never hit Philly in the twenty seven years I have lived here. We have gotten many grand snowstorms, especially in the last few years. Will Hurricane Sandy again have people complaining that the weather forecasters cry “wolf” for ratings or will it become a genuinely dangerous storm? The next couple of days will tell.

If I loose power I won’t be able to post but I will keep writing and post when I can. Wish us luck. We are defrosting a turkey to cook tomorrow and plan to hang out and see what happens. I hope everyone stays safe if this thing does hit.

Having gotten stuck in West Nyack, NY in last year’s Halloween Blizzard, I can relate. Good luck with your home and family…
