TV Eye

Stay with me here folks I have interesting news.

This week my DVR died.  I can’t believe how much I love this technology. When I need to pretend it is evening in the daytime, 15 or 20 minutes of DVR’ed TV can get me to fall asleep.  I love I can watch just a little bit of a show and fall asleep and watch the rest later.  I can watch whatever junk TV I want, whenever I want.  Now I have a new DVR and I have to find all the junk for the brain all over again.

Setting up the DVR had me thinking of my friend Rick D who died three years ago today.  Rick had a real “tough, yet sensitive guy” persona.  He always wore all black and motorcycle boots in all-weather but when it got late and had a few drinks he was one of the lovey-est people I ever met.  Today as I was setting up my DVR I had this memory of Rick that made me laugh.  I remember when I worked for him on Monday nights I was not allowed to call till after the TV show, 90210 was over.  The thought of that still makes me laugh, big tough guy loving his 90210.  Rest in Peace, friend.

This Monday when I was at work my friend Marc and I were chatting. He was telling me about this show he was doing.  They were doing a Stooges cover night at a local bar for Hatii.  In my lack of sleep stupor, I let him talk me into joining his band to cover TVEye.  At first, I was a little hesitant.  My friend started emailing me about it again.  His band rehearses really close to my house and we have some time that we can get together to rehearse.  I was a bit hesitant to tell my husband.  I was not sure how he’d take the extra solo parenting duties but he was excited for me to get back on the horse so to speak.  Tonight as we cleaned up the kitchen after dinner and picked up the geo-track trains the boys had strewn around the house we had family rock out night.  They were really excited that Mom was going to sing with the band but they were so mad they couldn’t come.

So you Philly peeps can come see punky mama get her groove on. I will post the date and place when I get more details…..Stay tuned.

That NY Times Article

I cut out of work tonight. Translation: I gave my shift to someone because I am in need of sleep.  I want to sleep like people are supposed to and sometimes I have to give up some work to do it.

Most of you don’t usually read Mom Blogs but there has been major drama this week.  The New York Times published an article marginalizing Mom’s who write on the internet.  Some women have made a buisness out of writing their blogs other women, like myself,  are here for the community. I am not linking to the article because if I link to the article it may drive traffic to the site.  This post explains the article in question.

When I joined my band Thorazine there were few women singing for punk bands with men and women members.  There was the whole Riot Grrl Movement.  I never fit in with the Riot Grrl thing.  We rarely toured with other bands with female members except for our friends the 440′s.  Over time we met bands with women to trade some shows with and we did some shows regionally.   I did what I wanted  to do although it would of been great to be part of a larger community of women, I had to be me. I was the only woman on most of our tours alone or with other bands.  We found our niche as a band and it worked for us.  I felt marginalized so many times by bouncers who would not let me into the club because, “there were no women in Thorazine” to people who said I had testicles under my dress. I spoke many times to a class as the University of New Jersey.  The class was about Women in Punk Rock: being female in a male subculture.  Last time I spoke I was about 7 months pregnant with tattoos flying.  I loved the look on the class’ face when looking at my belly like how can you be part of a male subculture and a mother.  Punk, Mother, those are descriptions but not who I am because I am a person.

I found it ironic to be now be part of women on the internet. I want to say when the mainstream media is marginalizing what you are doing you are cool and cutting edge women bloggers.  We have a huge internet community that is supportive of women who come from all walks of life, races, religions, and sexual orientation who are bound together by their similarities not differences.  As newspapers financially go down the drain there are many women making money working from home, writing on the internet.  Rock on ladies as the establishment burns.
